On to the semifinals for state basketball championship tournaments in KS

Several area teams advanced Thursday into the semifinals at high school state championship basketball tournaments.

In the Class 6A quarterfinals at Koch Arena in Wichita, the Derby girls (22-0) walloped Shawnee Mission Northwest 60-27.

In the Class 5A quarterfinals at Emporia, the top-seed Maize boys advanced with an 83-56 win vs. St. James Academy; Maize is 23-0. The Andover Central boys (20-3) advanced with a win over Pittsburg 78-61. And the #7-seed Bishop Carroll boys made it into the semifinals with an 87-70 upset win over #2-seed Bonner Springs.

In the Class 4A quarterfinals in Salina, the Nickerson girls (20-3) beat Abilene 54-46.

In the Class 2A quarterfinals in Hays, the Garden Plain girls (19-4) topped West Elk 52-40. The Sterling girls (20-4) also advanced into the semifinals, with a 66-58 win against Jackson Heights.

In the Class 1A quarterfinals at Dodge City, the Caldwell boys (24-2) advanced with a 38-27 win vs. Berean Academy.
