Happy birthday to former Kansas City Chiefs running back Mike Garrett, who turns 74 years old today.

Garrett was a Heisman Trophy winner in college at USC, and was drafted three times to play major league baseball, by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and twice by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Even though football was Garrett's choice, the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL refused to settle on the 5-foot-9 Garrett as their #1 draft choice, instead taking him in the second round of the 1966 draft; that probably did not sit well with the college star.

There was also a rumor that he had already signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders of the AFL, so Garrett's name fell in the American Football League draft all the way down to the 20th round, where he was chosen by the savvy Kansas City Chiefs, who signed him for $500,000 (nearly $3.8 million in today's money).

Garrett went on to play for the Chiefs in both Super Bowl I and Super Bowl IV; Garrett scored a rushing touchdown for the Chiefs in their Super Bowl win over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.

He is a member of the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame.
